Massachusetts' 2nd Largest Carrier Drops Medicare Advantage

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care will bail out of Medicare Advantage, causing 22,000 seniors in Massachusetts to lose their Medicare benefits, according to the Boston Globe (hat tip to Avik Roy).

This is a direct consequence of ObamaCare - and one that I anticipated last December in a study of Medicare Advantage.

I always listened to this discussion, dumbfounded by their lack of understanding of the benefits of this program. They apparently never discussed the benefits and drawbacks of one of these plans with some users of the plans and how it extended the Medicare coverage, or supplied it in certain instances, or smoothed over some erratic regulatory requirements for hospitalization stays.Who would not gladly pay for that? Is it one buyer's fault that another cannot afford that same product that you might? I would be willing to bet that if the premiums were were raised users would cover that "horrific overcharge that these insurers steal from the Medicare system annually", What would it cost.$5.00 per policy holder?
